Z for Zachariah [Study Guide] Student book Year 9+
Robert O’Brien’s novel, Z for Zachariah, takes the form of the diary of a girl who survives a nuclear holocaust. She finds herself alone on a remote farm, until a stranger arrives. This useful booklet begins with material to prepare students for reading the novel; it includes a challenging survival game and an exploration of genre through a comparison of the covers of different editions. Ideas for writing and discussion and some background material on nuclear war are also provided. A comparison is invited of the text of the novel and the BBC television script of the play made from the book. An extract from the script is given to allow close study of differences in form and content.
